Reverse of Volume

Yasuaki Onishi (JP)

Reverse of volume : a landscape drawn by the void, a track that becomes a presence… This monumental installation of the Japanese artist Yasuaki Onishi, made up from the simplest materials (a plastic membrane, drips of black glue…), shapes an inverted landscape that the visitor gets to comprehend from various points of view, until he losts his bearings : a mountainous landscape or a rocky cavity, a massive presence or an evanescent track… In order to define his creative process, the artists mentions he “captures the invisible” : grasping the trace of something that was here, but is no longer. He says something about memory and the ephemeral, as this vast and spectacular landscape turns out to be extremely fragile as one approaches. Subtly, the art of Yasuaki Onishi wonderfully mixes aesthetic force and metaphoric depth.
