Physical Mind

Teun Vonk / Studio Tony Spark (NL)

Physical Mind is an immersive installation created by Dutch artist Teun Vonk. While in residency at the Chronus Art Center in Shanghai, Vonk came up with an experience that would work on the concepts of physical stimulation through pressure, in order to reduce physical or psychological stress.

Physical Mind appears as a structure, made from two glowing inflatable objects, on which the public can lie down. Thus lying down, the participant slowly rises up away from the ground as the object is inflated. He is then gently pressed against the soft curves of the installation. While the elevation creates a feeling of instability, the rising stress is quickly balanced out by the sensation of safety from being carefully covered by those two bright and soft objects.

By applying physical pressure on the body and exposing the participants to a dim light, Teun Vonk’s installation explores the relations between psychic and corporeal states; an original way of bringing scientific and artistic principles together in a unique physical and mental experience.
