SOLAR FUTURES invites three individual artists to explore Solarpunk, a movement envisioning optimistic, ecologically harmonious futures where humans, technology, and nature coexist sustainably. This international residency offers the opportunity to create, develop, and present new artworks across Brussels, The Hague, Rennes, and Gijón.
Positioned against techno-pessimism and climate anxiety, Solarpunk promotes open-source tools, circular systems, low-impact technologies and decentralised cooperation. While Solarpunk has emerged in design and literature, it remains underexplored in the field of contemporary art. SOLAR FUTURES brings its positive, hopeful vision to life through concrete artistic production and public engagement.
Artists are invited to apply with a proposal in one of three artistic formats: a physical installation, a screen-based experience, or a live performance. Each format is linked to a specific thematic pathway. Physical installations focus on renewable energy and circular resources. Screen-based works explore permacomputing and digital sobriety. Live performances address new imaginaries for political and societal organisation. Each selected artist will develop one work within a single format and theme.
