Katarina Gryvul is a Ukrainian composer, music producer, multi-instrumentalist and founder of founder and director of Gryvul School working across contemporary ensemble music, electroacoustic composition, immersive spatial audio, sound installation, and music for visual media.
She has often felt a sense of not fully belonging, an experience that has deeply shaped the way she relates to sound. For Gryvul, music becomes a way to express what resists language and, at the same time, to construct a language of her own. She thinks of sound as a form of boundary: something that can both separate and connect, protect and expose. When this boundary feels unstable, sound can function as a support system, helping to maintain a sense of integrity and orientation.
Through this approach, Gryvul works with timbre, density, and contrast to shape a musical language that is not only heard, but physically experienced. Her practice moves between acoustic and electronic sound, often exploring the physical, spatial, and psychological dimensions of listening.
An internationally recognised Ukrainian artist, Katarina Gryvul has performed at events including Ars Electronica, Rewire, CTM, the L.E.V. Festival, Nuits Sonores, the Festival Présences (Radio France) and Luxembourg Art Week, amongst others. As founder of the Gryvul School, she has been teaching composition, music theory, electroacoustic music and production for over 15 years, having trained more than 100 students. As part of the Transition to 8 project, Katarina Gryvul has also led workshops with a deliberately diverse group of participants for Electroni[k] at the Antipode.
